SPATIAL ANALYSIS OF DRAINAGE NETWORK FOR GROUND WATER EXPLORATION IN RIVER BASIN USING GIS AND REMOTE SENSING TECHNI- QUES : A CASE STUDY OF TONS RIVER IN ALLAHABAD, INDIA

ABSTRACT

 

Groundwater is one of the most precious natural resource, which supports human health, economic development and ecological diversity. For a long time in developing country like India had been dependent on monsoons to meet its fresh water requirements. However, over the years groundwater is being increasingly used for this purpose. This has resulted in reducing country's dependency on monsoon, but at the same time has led to depletion of groundwater level. The present paper is to find out ground water in Tons Basin of Allahabad District. The river Tons traversed for a distance of 72.5 km and basin covers partially or completely 8 blocks of Allahabad district, out of total 20 blocks. With the help of Survey of India toposheets i.e 63G/12, 63G/16,63GH13, 63K/3, 63K/4, 63K/8, 63L/1, L/5 and satellite thematic maps like base map, drainage map, drainage density, stream frequency have been prepared using ArcGIS 9.2 software .The major work carried out includes creation of Drainage Map, with stream ordering of study region to explain topographical characteristics of the study region. The drainage pattern in the river basin is dendritic drainage. It has been found that, GIS is very useful in ground water exploration of a river Basin Area
