ARSENIC CONTAMINATION OF GROUNDWATER IN SOUTH AND EAST ASIA

ABSTRACT

 

This paper discusses the present level of trace metals in the South and East Asian countries and outlines mitigation measures by way of discussing the technologies for treatment of arsenic-contaminated water, arsenic detection and measurement technologies, and alternative safe water options. After a brief introduction, the paper examines the principles of arsenic removal from drinking water and explores the major technologies associated with each. The objective of the paper is to provide technical staff in governments, development organizations, nongovernmental organizations and other interested stakeholders with up-to-date information on the technical aspects of arsenic mitigation in order to familiarize them with the most commonly used mitigation methods. This paper discusses the treatment methods available for arsenic-contaminated water and outlines water supply options for arsenic mitigation, in line with the spirit of the UNís Millennium Development Goals.
