SYNTHESIS OF CELLULOSE BASED POLYMERS FOR SORPTION OF AZO DYES FROM AQUEOUS SOLUTION

ABSTRACT

 

Cellulose based polymers were synthesized using epichlorohydrin as a cross linking agent in the presence of NH4OH and used as a sorbent for the removal of azo dyes from aqueous solutions. Two cellulose based adsorbents (polymer 1 and polymer 2) were prepared using different amount of epichlorohydrin and were characterized using FT-IR technique. Trapaeolin 000, methyl orange and amaranth dyes were used to study the adsorption behaviors under various parameters such as pH, adsorption time, and dose of polymers. Result showed that these absorbent exhibited high sorbent capacities towards Tropaeolin 000 dye (90%) and Amaranth dye (94%). The sorption capacity of dyes on polymers was dependent on the presence of sulfonate and hydroxyl groups of the dyes. The adsorption isotherm was discussed by modeling Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm.
