ABSTRACT

A systematic investigation has been carried out to study the ground water quality, nutrient status and physico-chemical characteristics of Maraimalai Nagar Town, Tamil Nadu, India . Water for human consumption should be free from pathogenic agents and harmful chemicals, pleasant to taste and unable for domestic purpose, The study was carried out by collecting ground water samples from different localities in Maraimalai Nagar town where 220 SIDCO industries were located and the water samples were analysed for their physico-chemical charactetistics. The parameters namely TDS,TSS,pH, Total Hardness, various metals, calcium, magnesium, electrical conductivity were compared with the ISO 10500 standards of drinking water quality of India . An attempt has been made to find the quality of the ground water is suitable for drinking purpose in Maraimalai Nagar, Tamil Nadu, India, . The quality of water samples under study were above the desirable limit but within the tolerance level. The ground water in the sampling station has to be treated for infectious diseases. The study also included the correlation coefficient analysis between the physico-chemical parameters. The significant values of the observed correlation coefficient is elaborately discussed in this paper and various suggestions, to improve the water quality pertaining to the sampling station, is also discussed.
