ABSTRACT

Urban life in the world is expanding rapidly. Growth of urbanization in developing countries is faster than developed countries. The urban growth in Iran has also been rapid, and this rapid growth, has created issues and problems for many cities. Meanwhile, slums have an important and special place in the reflection of urban issues. The purpose of this article is to examine factors affecting formation of slums and its consequences in Ahvaz metropolis. Research methodology of this paper is survey method and its sampling method is multi-stage cluster sampling. The statistical society in this study is Ahvaz slums, 1385 in number, habitating more than 120,000 people. 384 persons were selected as the sample size. This research has been designed and implemented by questionnaire. The results showed that migration from rural and small urban environments around the Ahvaz city is the most important factor in creating and expanding these marginal areas, which itself has been affected by the economic and social-cultural repulsions of the previous residence and the economic and social-cultural attractions of the city. Also in the field of social consequences, it was found that there is relationship between the slum intensity and increase in relative deprivation, which finally, leads to prevailing culture of poverty in Slums.
