SURVEY OF Caracal caracal IN KAVIR NATIONAL PARK IN IRAN

ABSTRACT

 

The caracal (Caracal caracal) is one of the small felid species and secretive animal in Iran. We could prepare the distribution map of caracal by data and evidences in Iran Department of Environment and field visits. With field surveys in Kavir National Park in September 2006, we achieved some results concerning caracal’S habitat characteristics and were identified the rodents that can use by caracals as prey, like Cape hare: Lepus capensis, Small five- toed jerboa: Allactaga elater, Blanford’S jerboa: Jaculus blanfordi, Persian jird: Meriones persicus. Also we introduced factors of threaten caracal population in Iran, for instance loss habitat, lack of prey and in some protected areas to collision with vehicles on the road.
