CHALLENGES AND POSSIBILITIES OF MEMBRANES TECHNOLOGY IN CHROME PLATING EFFLUENT TREATMENT

ABSTRACT

 

Separation of hexavalent chromium from synthetic effluent was investigated using nanofiltration membrane. Application of nanofiltration in chrome plating industry was discussed with its economic benefits on recovery of chromium and water from chrome plating effluent by cost analysis simulation using MATLAB. Limitation on membrane operating condition and challenges on higher recovery are presented in detailed for chrome plating operation with theoretical material and energy balance. The effect of transmembrane pressure and feed concentration found major influencing parameters on membrane capital and operating cost as well as chromium recovery. The net profit were observed at higher feed solute concentration and high permeate recovery was observed at high operating pressure
