ENHANCEMENT OF Spirulina platensis GROWTH USING COCONUT WATER SUPPLEMENTED MEDIA

ABSTRACT

 

Spirulina platensis is a photosynthetic filamentous cyanobacterium. Owing to its high protein content of about 70% along with high amounts of essential fatty acids, vitamins, minerals etc, it can be used as a food supplement for humans and as animal feed. It is usually grown in a chemical media such as Zarrouk’s media. The current study aims to grow Spirulina platensis in reduced concentrations of Zarrouk’s media that is supplemented with coconut water in the hope to achieve similar growth rates and protein productivity. Experimental conditions were kept common across the different methods. In method 1, it was observed that 0.5-2.5% coconut water supplemented Zarrouk’s media (Highest being 0.5%) showed enhanced growth and the growth was stabilized after day 28 due to initiation of death phase. In method 2, 2% coconut water was used to supplement lower Zarrouk’s media concentrations and the growth in 100% and 50% (with 2% coconut water) Zarrouk’s media was found to be comparable. The significance of the viable supplements that enhance the growth under the favorable conditions is the present challenge.
