ABSTRACT

Many health problems are associated with ageing, there is a growing body of evidence that older people are at risk of multiple and co morbid conditions. In Nigeria, the health issues and concerns of the elderly in the rural areas have largely been ignored in health research, programmes and policy development. This study was designed to examine the determinants of the health problems of the elderly in rural areas of Kabba/Bunu Local Government Area, Kogi State, Nigeria by identifying the health problems of the elderly and determining the determinants of their health problems. Data gathered through questionnaire administration, focus group discussion and articles were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Analysis of Variance and Stepwise Multiple Regression. Arthritis, Visual Impairment, Hypertension and Rheumatism were the prevalent health problems reported in the study area. The result of the stepwise regression analysis revealed that affordability of healthcare services and source of drinking water were the major determinants of the health problems of the elderly in the study area, explaining 79.9% of variability in the percentage of elderly with health problems. The study concludes that health problems among the elderly are rampant in the rural areas because of the inability of the rural elderly to afford and access basic healthcare and potable water, the Government, policy makers and the research community need to be aware of these determinants and their risk factors and address them appropriately so that the associated health problems can be managed and reduced.
