EVALUATION OF NOISE POLLUTION LEVEL IN IRAN FOR THE PURPOSE OF PREVENTION AND CONTROLLING ITS EFFECTS : A CASE STUDY OF AREA 4 - AHVAZ CITY

ABSTRACT

 

Noise pollution in urban areas is one of the major environmental problems that can cause harmful effects such as hearing loss, sleeping disorders, high blood pressure and many other problems for the people residing in cities. For the purpose of preventing and controlling such effects, evaluation and measuring of the noise pollution in the cities is deemed essential. The present study was carried out for the purpose of evaluating noise pollution in the Zone 4 of Ahwaz City District, Iran. In this study, 40 stations were chosen for investigation. Samples were taken daily (from 7:00 to 22:00) for a period of 7 days during winter 2012 and , Lmin, Lmax, Leq were measured in all the stations. Average level of equivalent sound obtained from selected stations were then compared with reference values of Iran sounds and almost in all stations the resulted values were higher than standards. To evaluate the knowledge of citizens regarding noise pollution and its effects on humans, parallel to the measurements, 200 questionnaires were filled by people from public area 4. The results of sampling and questionnaire surveys, were analyzed using the statistical software SPSS. Another key result of this study was providing map of alignment noise to determine the critical points in area 4 in terms of noise pollution. Finally with considering the results of measurements and comparison with standard values and with regard to noise pollution control methods used in other countries, appropriate solutions were suggested.
