ELECTRO COAGULATION TECHNOLOGY FOR TREATMENT OF BIOLOGICALLY TREATED EFFLUENT OF AN ACTIVE PHARMACEUTICAL INGREDIENT MANUFACTURING INDUSTRY AT INDUSTRIAL SCALE

ABSTRACT

 

The present investigation was carried out to study the capability of electro coagulation process for tertiary treatment of biologically treated effluent at industrial scale (M/S Symbiotec Pharma Lab Ltd. Indore, M.P., India). The Electro coagulation (E.C.) as a tertiary treatment technology for Secondary (biologically) Treated Effluent (STE) was conducted by using Aluminium plate as sacrificial anode and stainless steel (SS) plate as cathode without addition of any electrolytes and chemicals for correction in pH. The secondary treated effluent contains some colloidal and suspended particles along with dissolved organic and inorganic constituents. These impurities increase the COD, BOD values. The presence of TSS, TDS and colloidal matter in STE make them turbid as well as contribute some organic load also. Treatment of STE by E.C. produced very transparent (turbid free), colourless and odourless treated effluent with reduced organic and inorganic load as compared to STE. The parameters which showed their great influence on electrocoagulation of secondary treated effluent were distance between electrodes, DC power applied, retention time, cleaning status of electrodes and nature of impurities present in secondary treated effluent. This technology applied in batch process and did not require any addition of chemicals. The Electro-coagulation of STE is Eco-friendly, cost-effective and less time consuming technology which maintained the standard parameters of treated effluent by considering social and legal obligation. M/S Symbiotec Pharma Lab Ltd. indore, M.P., India introduced and operated successfully this revolutionary technology for tertiary treatment of secondary (Biologically) treated effluent (STE) at industrial scale as polishing unit first time among Indian Active Pharmaceuticals Ingredients (API) manufacturing industries.
