ABSTRACT

Ujjain-1 is a mutant of Neurospora crassa which has been isolated from visible colony growing on discarded bread piece in Ujjain (Madhya Pradesh, India). This mutant shows a peculiar growth pattern. During the growth of the culture the main hyphae instead of growing straight bends down at the tip in the anticlockwise direction and the fungus grows forward by the extension of the lateral branch, which again bends at the tip after some growth and the pattern (anticlockwise curling of hyphal tip) is repeated. Variability in degree of hyphal bending is seen in different cultures revived from the same parental stock. Ujjain-1 was crossed with wild type strain of N. crassa to study the inheritance of this character and the results are described in this paper.
