STUDIES ON OLIGOMERIC LIGAND BASED ON NOVOLAC RESIN

ABSTRACT

 

Acid catalyzed phenol(4-Ethylphenol)-formaldehyde (EPF) i.e. novolac resin was prepared by established method. It was treated with phthalic anhydride. The resultant oligomeric ligand called Phthalated Novolac (PH-EPF) was characterized by elemental and spectral analysis. The oligomeric metal chalets of PH-EPF with Cu2+, Co2 , Mn2+ and Zn2+ metal ions were prepared and studied for their metal:ligand (M:L) stoichiometry. Stoichiometry of all the complexes were studied by non aqueous titrations and elemental analysis. All the complexes are found in the ratio of 1:2. IR spectral studies also suggest the same ratio. Thermogravimetric study of these complexes shows that the stability of these complexes are in the following manner Mn > Cu > Co > Zn. Spectral, thermogravimetric and magnetic studies reveals octahedral structure of all complexes. Antibacterial studies for all complexes are studied against gram positive and gram negative bacteria. It was found that these metal complexes are good to use as agricultural and garden fungicides
