ABSTRACT

 

Appropriate Rural Technology Institute (ARTI), Pune, India is a registered scientific society NGO, established in April 1996 by a group of scientists, technologists and social workers to develop and transfer innovative, sustainable technologies to rural people. ARTI has bagged Ashden Awards (UK) for Compact Biogas System and for Charcoaling technology. The objective of the paper is to analyze the contribution of the models developed by ARTI in renewable energy for sustainable development. The paper is based on a part of the University Grants Commission, New Delhi, India, Major Research Project, 2011. An exploratory research design has been used for the study. The primary data have been collected by visiting the organization and interviewing the beneficiaries. The qualitative data from the some beneficiaries in the form of their views are recorded. The secondary data were obtained from Websites of Ashden and ARTI. ARTI has contributed through renewable energy projects to sustainable development.
