THE DIVERSITY OF TERRESTRIAL BIRDS IN AND AROUND HAVERI, KARNATAKA, INDIA

ABSTRACT

 

This paper describes the terrestrial birds found in Haveri district and also in neighboring districts like Davangeri, Bellary, Gadag and Uttara Kannada, India. Fortnightly observations were made on the occurrence of terrestrial birds species in and around Haveri from April 2013 to March 2014. During the study period 79 species of terrestrial birds were recorded at 24 localities. The identified species are grouped into three categories viz : (i) birds of prey (raptors) (ii) garden birds (passerines or perching birds and non passerines) and (iii) pet birds. Checklist includes the birds found around peacock sanctuary at Bankapur, Blackbuck sanctuary at Ranebennur, magadi bird sanctuary and attiveri bird sanctuary in Mundagod taluka. Thus the study provides a comprehensive account of the terrestrial birds observed in and around the gateway district to North Karnataka region, India
