DOES THE CORRELATION BETWEEN RAINFALL VS DENGUE HEMORRHAGIC FEVER INCIDENCE ALWAYS EXIST : CASE STUDY IN PHUKET, THAILAND

ABSTRACT

 

Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever (DHF) is a common vector-borne disease caused by mosquito Aedes sp. and at times leads to death. In the past 10 years, climate change has led to an increase in rainfall in Phuket, along with an increase in mosquito breeding sites and the DHF incidence in Phuket. This study was carried out to determine the correlation between the annual rainfall in Phuket and the DHF incidence in the City of Phuket and in Phuket Province, Thailand. Retrospective data from 20042013 for the annual rainfall and the DHF incidence in the City of Phuket and in Phuket Province had been reviewed. Mean, Median, Standard Deviation (SD) and Pearson product-moment correlation coefficient were used for data analysis. The results revealed that the annual rainfall in Phuket ranged from 1,516.7 to 2,788.3 mm. with a median of 2,372 mm and a mean of 2,287.54 mm. (SD 350.71). The DHF incidence per 100,000 population in the City of Phuket ranged from 19.9 to 296.1 with a median of 60.95, a mean of 83.7 (SD 81.99). Concurrently, the DHF incidence per 100,000 popula tion in Phuket Province ranged from 40.1 to 623.16 with a median of 102.05 and a mean of 167.27 (SD 176.23). The findings revealed that there was no correlation between the annual rainfall and the DHF incidence either in the City of Phuket or in Phuket Province. The intervention of the Buddy Pro gram (2+1) among Phuket Municipal school children might help lower the DHF incidence in Phuket
