SCREENING OF GROUNDNUT ( Arachis hypogaea L.) VARIETIES FOR DROUGHT TOLERANCE THROUGH PHYSIOLOGICAL INDICES

ABSTRACT

 

Groundnut (Arachishypogaea L.) is an important oilseeds crop of India, however, its area under cultivation varies considerably (between 6.0 - 8.0million hectares) mainly due to various abiotic stresses including drought. Thus, in vivo pot culture screening of four groundnut varieties (TAG- 24, TG-26, WEST-20 and WEST-44)was India undertaken in drought induced stress conditions to assess their tolerance towards drought on the basis of physiological indices. Research experiments were conducted in Botanical garden of Fergusson College, Pune, India. Experiments were based on a completely randomized block design with three replications and four varieties under four soil moisture conditions (100%, 80%, 60% and 40%). During study period physiological indices such as, Relative Water Content (RWC), Membrane Stability Index (MSI), Chlorophyll Stability Index (CSI), Drought Tolerance Index (DTI) and Harvest Index (HI) were evaluated. All drought stressed plants showed gradual and significant decrease with respect to aforesaid physiological indices. Among four varieties screened for drought stress it was observed that. TAG-24 and var.WEST-44 were found to be tolerant to drought stress, as compared tovar.TG-26 and var. WEST-20.
