AN INVESTIGATION OF CHARACTERISTICS OF A LOW COST ADSORBENT FOR REMOVAL OF Zn2+ IONS FROM AQUEOUS SOLUTION

ABSTRACT

 

The objective of this study was to investigate removal characteristics of zinc (Zn2+) ions from aqueous solution using a low cost adsorbent i.e., exhausted thermal power plant coal fly ash. The adsorbent was characterized using particle size distribution, chemical composition, Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) and zeta potential methods. The effects of various experimental conditions such as dose of adsorbent, contact time both in stirring condition and steady state condition and initial metal concentration on the efficiency of removal of Zn2+ ions from the aqueous solution were studied at room temperature. In this study, it was found that fly ash effectively adsorb Zn2+ions from aqueous solution. When lime used as an admixture along with the fly ash, the removal tendency of Zn2+ ions from the solution was found to be increased.
